Captain Cook Cruise

with Guest Historian John Robson

5 Nights / 6 Days

Picton to Havelock

15 January 1770 - First Lieutenant James Cook's bark Endeavour entered Queen Charlotte Sound.  Cook was then aged 41.
16 January 1770 - Cook anchored in Ship Cove (Queen Charlotte Sound) until February 6th repairing the Endeavour.
23 January 1770 - Cook Strait discovered when Cook climbed hill in Marlborough Sounds and sighted the eastern sea...

And so began Lieutenant James Cooks exploration of New Zealand over three voyages until his final departure on 26 February 1777.

Travel with us in the path of Captain Cook and his bark Endeavour in the Queen Charlotte Sound and hear about Cook's Adventures.  Our journey will also include highlights of Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds.

  • Go ashore at Ship Cove where English explorer Captain James Cook made his home in the early 1770's.  Cook returned to Ship Cove on five separate occasions and spent over 100 days there, as it provided safe anchorage, food and fresh water, and timber for repairs to his ship.  Here you will find information panels explaining early Maori and European occupation and a monument to honour Captain Cook.
  • Walk sections of the award winning Queen Charlotte Track, which features regenerated native bush with Giant Rimu, Nikau, Beech trees and tree ferns.
  • Visit Motuara Island where Captain Cook raised the Union Jack on 30 January 1770 and proclaimed British Sovereignty over the South Island of New Zealand.  Motuara today is a bird Sanctuary Island where Robins, Tuis, Kiwis, Bellbirds and Kakariki live. Hear the birdsong and look out for the rare South Island Saddleback as you walk along.
  • Visit a Salmon Farm and learn the process of one of the many successful aquaculture industries in Marlborough.
  • Go ashore at Whareatea Bay on the east coast of D'Urville Island where the last of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust plaques marking James Cooks' New Zealand landing places was unveiled 16 February 1985.
  • Cast your rod and try your luck at catching a Blue Cod, Groper and other species in the waters of this pristine area.  There's nothing like eating fresh fish caught by your own hands.
  • Although Captain Cook didn't enter the Pelorus Sound, the largest of the sounds, we will also spend some time exploring this delightful maze of waterways, small bays, coves and islands.
  • Experience the beauty and tranquillity of the Marlborough Sounds as we leisurely cruise through the hidden bays and coves of the Sounds.

All walks are optional, you may wish to stay onboard and relax or there may be a shorter walk option that would suit you better.

Our friendly crew look forward to welcoming you onboard for a cruise that will leave you with a lifetime of memories.
